Research topic: Why Hong Kong teenagers like to consume on Korean pop music instead of local pop music?

1) Progress report - How many interviews did you do so far? And/or how many materials (i.e. media texts) did you research, and how did you research on the texts - textual analysis, genre study, etc. ?

Until now, I have done 3 interviews. Two are male and the other one is female, their ages are between 19 and 22. The interviews are quite smooth, I can get the answers that I ask and I think those answers are useful for me. For those interviews, I have set total 8 big questions. After they answer one question, I extend some more questions according to their answers as it can make my interview more in-deep for different person. For the last one interview, I will do it on 10th April. I will do it like the last three interview, first ask one big question then ask some questions according to their answers.

Here comes the 8 questions:
1. When is the first time you listen to k-pop music?
2. Do you still keep listen to k-pop music? And why?
3. Do you listen local pop music?
4. What kinds of k-pop music do you listen?
5. Which channel you use to listen k-pop music?
6.Who do you listen?
7. When do you listen to k-pop music? (morning / afternoon / night / on bus)
8. How do you know that they have new song debut?

For the materials, I have find 2 articles and they are <K pop The International Rise of the Korean Music Industry> and <The Globalization of K-Pop- Korea’s Place in the Global Music Industry>. They both talk about why k-pop music rise up sudden in the world and the reasons of why k-pop can attract people and why people addicted in it. I think these two articles can help to explain with the interviews, like some main points of the interview.

2) Preliminary findings - What do you discover up till now? (For example, what are the commonalities amongst the texts/interviews?) How do your findings help you answer your research question?

For the 3 interviews, I have find some common points and different reasons for the questions. I find that music video(MV) is very important for k-pop music as 3 interviewees watch the music video of the song that they listen. Also, they all think that k-pop music MVs are more interesting and attractive than local pop music MVs. One of the interviewee said that k-pop idols put many effort on every music they do, no matter pre-production or post-production. He said that the k-pop idols see the song as their kids and they see music as their life, so every music they produce come out good.

Besides, one interviewee watch the translation of the song every time. One watch sometime and the final one never watch. This shows that the meaning is not very important for Hong Kong teenagers. The melody and the singer can attract the Hong Kong teenagers to listen.

There still some more points that I have find in the interviews, I will organize it better and put it in my research report.

  2. Dear Harry, That's nice. It is not a must to extensively apply theoretical framework/concepts in this blog. But in the final essay, please be reminded that a theoretical framework is required for your discussion. The most straightforward one is the encoding/decoding model.
