1)Progress report - How many interviews did you do so far? And/or how many materials (i.e. media texts) did you research, and how did you research on the texts – textual analysis, genre study, etc.?
In my project, I have already selected 6 college students who watch Korean dramas and conducted interviews with them (3 female and 3 male college students). They are from HKU, UST and PolyU respectively. After organizing the data collected from the interviews, I will further analyze my research question: “How do Hong Kong male and female college students consume Korean drama?” based on the interview findings. For academic research, I have gathered around 10 relevant academic journals and selected 4 of them to focus on for deepening knowledge of encoding and decoding theory as well as getting more ideas and information regarding some other research results conducted by other scholars and educational institutions, which the research topics are in relation to my research topic. For example, the impacts of Korean drama in other countries, especially associated with different gender receptions towards culture, human behaviors, values and ideologies, for me to make reference to and work on the textual analysis.
2) Preliminary findings – What do you discover up till now? (For example, what are the commonalities amongst the texts/interviews?) How do your findings help you answer your research question?
In my interview result, I found out something which I had never think about before. For example, one of the interviewee compared Korean dramas with Hong Kong dramas, which he thought Korean dramas have more resources input on constructing the scenery settings and props. Also, Hong Kong actors and actresses are comparatively older and less attractive.
Another point is that I feel that male interviewees are generally more rational and having less impact on their behaviors and values after watching Korean dramas, whereas female interviewees are more on the emotional side and more favor of Korean dramas which are of romantic comedy or drama-comedy genre, in which the plot settings are usually related to rich/handsome man and poor woman relationship. It is assuming that female audience are easily affected by this norms and materialistic consumption will become the token of love as dating, love, and marriage are accompanied by shopping and gift giving.
For consumption behaviors affected by Korean dramas, male audience rather willing to purchase OST songs, whereas female audience more focus on fashion and cosmetics as they liked the refreshing looks of the Korean actors and actresses. As we can see, Korean dramas are generally causing larger impacts on female audience’s consumption.

Dear Ada, It seems that everything's going smoothly. In future, you can be more specific in your blog report. When you say some articles are collected for your project, you can put down the reference list for getting some feedback. Another relevant point is about the connection between these articles (and/or concepts) and your findings. You can try to make use of a couple of terms learnt from the article or class in your discussion. This is a good practice familarising you with academic writing skills.
