Done:
first group interviewee:

The first one is my girl friend (age18 ,student)that she will spent over 4hours to surf on the internet and view youtube video ,tvbmost / latest korean drama on website .she hate TVB a lot and think that tvb ’s entertainment is boring and meaningless.

The second one is my friend (age:21 ,lifeguard) that he have many free time during his job , so he don’t have time stay at home and usually passing the time by using his iPhone , he would like to whatsapp with others and view youtube , tvbmost , passiontimes ,Facebook and hkgolden forum .

The third one is a girl (age:20 saleswomen)that she just start begin using her iPhone to receive informations for online media around 6 months ago, in the past , because

The last one is a boy(age:18 music busker) that he just begin using his iPhone to surf on hkgolden forum and polygon music website about 9months ago, he think that online media can provide many kinds of informations than traditional media , so he decide to receive informations from online media , and he find he have many common chat topic and discussion with his friends(especially music buskers).

Going to do :

  1. collect all the datas to analyze ,and read all the references that i had found ,then to summarize all the useful point and complete the essay.
  2. ask Frankie that which part that i need to improve and correct to the right way

As i have interview 4 teenagers , there are 4 points that in conclusion to explain why they love online media than traditional one.

Convenience
smartphones can connect it , can passing their free time
Entertainment
more funny , can make them feel happy
Authenticity
the news from online media is more closer to reality sometimes
Selective
provide many choices can choose from internet that refer to yours hobbies and interests
Their interviews let me realize that there are many hong kong teenagers love online media than traditional one , i believe in the no longer years , if traditional media not change their broadcasting way and improve their programme’s quality ,online media will eliminate traditional media soon , and online media will become mainstreams media’s way that people receive information .

1. Progress report - How many interviews did you do so far? And/or how many materials (i.e. media texts) did you research, and how did you research on the texts – textual analysis, genre study, etc.?

In my project, I have completed my interviews with two interviewees; those two people also are hobbyist of Hollywood film. They not only love to watch Hollywood film but also they bought some products about Hollywood film and imitate the character of the film.
Form those two Hollywood film hobbyists I got some information about the attractive of Hollywood film, such as the heroism, they are also proud of the heroes of the Hollywood film, they think heroes not only have a righteous image but also they can gave reader a hope, because of that they love to imitate the hero of the film.

In other side, I also found some article to talk about the impact of Hollywood film, those impact are involve about film industry, society and economy, form those article I can found out more attractive of Hollywood film and the impact of Hollywood film on different group.

2. Preliminary findings – What do you discover up till now? (For example, what are the commonalities amongst the texts/interviews?) How do your findings help you answer your research question?

After the interviews, I discovered that heroism is one of the attractive of Hollywood film, also this is the common theme of Hollywood film, those film also are famous film of the world such as “Avengers” and  “Xmen”, we can see that no mater American society or Hong Kong society also support heroism, they think the society need a hero to solve some problem, because of that some people love to imitate the hero of Hollywood film to increase self-esteem.
In encoding and decoding model, those findings can relate to decoder’s “framework of knowledge”. In society some people think there was a problem that has existed for a long time, and they also want a hero can help them to solve those problem.

In this week I search some reference from internet and youtube , mostly  audience are male and they will like to walk to cinema to watch movie . And I realized male audience like the action movie a lot , and I found some reference it support my options . But have female will think about that most  strong lead by female will make people disliked by most men . But fun fact by the writer said actually most men they like the strong lead by women , and most people think that why male like it , because these actress are sexy and serous but actually it not correct , because in the research it show us , must popular sci-fi movie lead by actress the reason why the male like because they really like the strong alpha trait in the rule , such as “ Kill Bill ” “ Alien ” because they are very truly to show the audience how their power and strong . Of course not very “ strong ” movie they like , such as they don't like the actress shopping or crying it make them just feel fuss .

Actually , when i started the topic , and you told me I can follow the male gaze to think of it , i always think when the male watching the movie first attract them are the sexy body by the actress but when i search it , i realized it not truth , the point when the male gaze, they are looking at the Alpha female how strong of their rule and the story , it the most important thing they are looking for , and the sexy clothing or body language just a few factor .

When i interview my friend of the topic , he said that “Movie producers take advantage of "The male gaze" because males have more income and are less willing to dispose of it ” to me but how actually i understand his point , actually the truth reason he got attract for the movie is the story and not about the sexy thing in the movie , when he said that when i use “ male gaze ” to do my essay he think it too “ feminism ” but maybe he is right , but i think if i ask a girl same question , maybe i will get the same answer .

1) Progress report - How many interviews did you do so far? And/or how many materials (i.e. media texts) did you research, and how did you research on the texts – textual analysis, genre study, etc.?

In my project, i have completed my interviews with serval people. Two of them are the teenagers that familiar with the New media, that majorly use new media platform to receive message, and the other are the older generations that used to use traditional media and moving on adopting the new media. My major questions are :

1) What do you think the different of new media and traditional media ?
2) What's the advantage of both, and which one you prefer ?
3) What's your consideration when you receive news ?
4) What's the problem that traditional media has that new media can compensate ?

During, the interview some of them has provide some solid examples that to explain their point of view, for example they think that the traditional media platform are lack of numbers, so the news can't be comprehensive, and also they think Hong Kong has serious news filter problem, so that they prefer to receive it in New media, because they have more resources and could hear different side of the opinion, and to understand the incident fully.

2) Preliminary findings – What do you discover up till now? (For example, what are the commonalities amongst the texts/interviews?) How do your findings help you answer your research question?

After the interviews, i discovered that the demand of comprehensive story of teenagers are strong, they have lack of trust from the current serval traditional media platform, also they demand a platform to express their thought, and also be able to discuss with others, we can see the demand of the teenagers from the information are not just the messages itself anymore but also the action they can take from it. It is a huge discovery for me to write about it, because as long as the demand keeps going on, the position of traditional media will keep invading from the new media.
Also they new filter are one of the problem that the interviewers talked most about, so we can see that it is their major concern, we can see people of receiving messages are getting smarter, they would want to get a deeper understanding of what they hear, and the position, attitude of how the media broadcast would also affect the people's thought on the incident.

1) Progress report - How many interviews did you do so far? And/or how many materials (i.e. media texts) did you research, and how did you research on the texts – textual analysis, genre study, etc.?

In my project, I am now starting the in-depth interview of my research and everything goes smoothly. I have already interview 5 teenagers (3 male and 3female) who use this network platform to express their wishes and aspirations. They are aged between 19-25 years old. I have totally asked for 10 questions which mainly about:

1. To what extend you would publish the online political speech?

2. To what extend you would publish the political comments in the online more than reality?

3. What are the reasons that Hong Kong teenagers are politically apathetic and not keen on political activities?

4. To what extent will encourage you participate in any political activities or actual parade?

In order to give them a more specific comments to make and inspire their thinking , I have given them some information and news about the actual political and participate in online. A preliminary textual analysis has already started, I have some of the concept and building up the framework of my research.

2) Preliminary findings – What do you discover up till now? (For example, what are the commonalities amongst the texts/interviews?) How do your findings help you answer your research question?

After the interview, I discovered that teenagers are inseparable from Facebook and Youtube and other social media. More popular social media, including blog, podcast, Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, forums etc. The rise of social media, the online speech started to affect public opinion. All respondents believe that social media can let everyone use their spare time to monitor the government, put forward their demands and organize action. Although there is often occur network public trial and cyberbullying phenomenon in the online world, all respondents agree that social media force to cohesion opinions, monitoring government policies which helps to promote social movements. It has a very significant effect.

Some of them view that publish the online political speech does not mean that will not participate in social movements. Social media facilitate meetings and activities of youth organizations, giving them another platform to express their views while receiving social and political information to gain insight into the process of political and social law. Since the network statement do not need to identify themselves, teenagers can publish their thoughts, the move both have advantages and disadvantages, immature young people are more vulnerable to herding effects and they often fail to fully understand the truth of the incident. I reversed myself on the view of teenagers are usually apathetic to politics. They are not politically apathetic, they are even more eager to participate in politics than adults. It is only the difference between younger and older people on expressing of political views.

Research topic: Why Hong Kong teenagers like to consume on Korean pop music instead of local pop music?

1) Progress report - How many interviews did you do so far? And/or how many materials (i.e. media texts) did you research, and how did you research on the texts - textual analysis, genre study, etc. ?

Until now, I have done 3 interviews. Two are male and the other one is female, their ages are between 19 and 22. The interviews are quite smooth, I can get the answers that I ask and I think those answers are useful for me. For those interviews, I have set total 8 big questions. After they answer one question, I extend some more questions according to their answers as it can make my interview more in-deep for different person. For the last one interview, I will do it on 10th April. I will do it like the last three interview, first ask one big question then ask some questions according to their answers.

Here comes the 8 questions:
1. When is the first time you listen to k-pop music?
2. Do you still keep listen to k-pop music? And why?
3. Do you listen local pop music?
4. What kinds of k-pop music do you listen?
5. Which channel you use to listen k-pop music?
6.Who do you listen?
7. When do you listen to k-pop music? (morning / afternoon / night / on bus)
8. How do you know that they have new song debut?

For the materials, I have find 2 articles and they are <K pop The International Rise of the Korean Music Industry> and <The Globalization of K-Pop- Korea’s Place in the Global Music Industry>. They both talk about why k-pop music rise up sudden in the world and the reasons of why k-pop can attract people and why people addicted in it. I think these two articles can help to explain with the interviews, like some main points of the interview.

2) Preliminary findings - What do you discover up till now? (For example, what are the commonalities amongst the texts/interviews?) How do your findings help you answer your research question?

For the 3 interviews, I have find some common points and different reasons for the questions. I find that music video(MV) is very important for k-pop music as 3 interviewees watch the music video of the song that they listen. Also, they all think that k-pop music MVs are more interesting and attractive than local pop music MVs. One of the interviewee said that k-pop idols put many effort on every music they do, no matter pre-production or post-production. He said that the k-pop idols see the song as their kids and they see music as their life, so every music they produce come out good.

Besides, one interviewee watch the translation of the song every time. One watch sometime and the final one never watch. This shows that the meaning is not very important for Hong Kong teenagers. The melody and the singer can attract the Hong Kong teenagers to listen.

There still some more points that I have find in the interviews, I will organize it better and put it in my research report.

My research topic is “How do Hong Kong teenagers interpret Patrick Kong's movies?” From now on I have finished the first interview and read around 5 textual materials.

I decided to invite around 4 different people to do the interview in order to observe and probe any special thing that worth study on. In my expectation, at the end of my work should find some academic result in the way of the gender different.

At last Sunday (3/4/2016), I have finished the first interview. He is my secondary schoolmate who are the faithful follower of Stephy Tang, the main actress starring at Patrick’s movies regularly.

From him I got the message that Patrick’s movies are like virus more than art pieces. He claimed that those movie are based on the same formula that the existence of treating must appear in a relationship. He found those movies can change the audience’s mind to think negative of the real world as he met a situation that his ex-girlfriend thought he was not devoted in the relationship after they watched “L for Love, L for Lie” at 2008.  It was the movie they watched together when they were 14, the period of teenage.

He have watched the movie “Anniversary” recently. He found it is a movie that can refreshed the memory of his ex-girlfriend. Even though 'cheating', still, were the main element that the movie talking about, the reason he watched the movie is to memorize the bygones. He found the movie can be the proof of flying time.

For the result of this interview, I got a clear direction that what should I do and the question be set in the following interview. I discover one important thing that some people might be affected after watching the movie. It means that if people believe a message, this message would influence the people's mind.

According to Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding model, the decoding of a message is how an audience member is able to understand. and interpret the message. The audience will reconstruct the idea by the giving meanings. It is undoubtedly that can fulfill the situation I mentioned on the above that the girl might find the movie refresh the true reality. In the following, I would like to interview the girl, my friend's ex-girlfriend, to probe and apply the encoding/decoding model so that I can understand in what extent she wanted to break up with my friend is related to Patrick's romance movie.

Also, I have invite a pair of couple to help me do a interview this weekend. They are nowadays the secondary school student and only have watched 'Anniversary' of Patrick's movie. For this interview, I want to compare the mindset between the past and nowadays teenagers on how they feel of the movies.

1. Progress report - How many interviews did you do so far? And/or how many materials (i.e. media texts) did you research, and how did you research on the texts – textual analysis, genre study, etc.?

Up to now, I have interviewed two female and two male teenagers on the 4th April 2016.  They are aged between 18-23 years old.  The interviews hold around 20-30 minutes.
In the interview, I have asked about 4 main questions:
1. Why do you like playing GTA 5?
2. Which past/ section in GTA do you like play the most?
3. Do you think that GTA 5 is a violence game?
4. How often do you play GTA?
Then they had an small discussion after each question.  I jot down their key points and find out some resources are useful to answer my research topic.  Moreover, there will be another two interviews on 10th April 2016.  I will interview a female who aged 21 and a male who aged 20.

Besides, I have researched some materials that related to violence video games, the players' review about the GTA 5 and Hong Kong teenagers' attitude toward violence.  For example, I found that there is a game call "Sleeping Dog".  The playing method is similar than GTA 5.  As in the interview, an interviewer has mentioned that he loves playing different kind of violence video game, but GTA 5 is the most favorite game for him.  Therefore, I tried to research the game that he has played and see the difference between those games and GTA 5.  Also, there are some articles about the Hong Kong youth violence, it is useful for my research because I discover that there are some similarity reasons they play violence games and be violence.  And I will continue to find some related and useful materials as to enrich my research.

2. Preliminary findings – What do you discover up till now? (For example, what are the commonalities amongst the texts/interviews?) How do your findings help you answer your research question?

After the interview, I discovered that they think that GTA 5 is a violence game but it is acceptable for them.  Although there are many shooting, killing scenes in the game, they still love playing the game.  Also, GTA 5 caused great excitement for them because they can do what they like to do in the unrealistic would such as make a tattoo on their body and steal a luxury car in the street.  These behaviors cannot do in the real world.  Therefore, GTA 5 can fulfill their desires and wants.

Furthermore, I noticed that there are some difference reasons on playing the game between male and female.  For the male, they love racing car in the GTA 5 as they cannot race car as fast as possible in the real world.  And they will die when they have a car crash, but in the game world they have unlimited life, they can race as fast as they can.  No matter there is a car accident, they can still race the car.  It shows that the male hope to experience the exciting things, for example, catch by the police, kill the people to get back money.  On the other hand, for the female, in the GTA 5 they can choose the gender of the character, most of them like choosing to be a male.  As they wish to act as a male in the game and hide their exact gender, they think that male is more powerful than a female and hope to use a male angle to see the world.

The above findings are the basic findings and I will analyze the data more deeply as to find out more information.

1)     Progress report - How many interviews did you do so far? And/or how many materials (i.e. media texts) did you research, and how did you research on the texts – textual analysis, genre study, etc.?

I had interview one people and researched 3 - 4 eassies about self-censorship of News medias including

  1. Hong Kong ' s news media five years after the handover: Prospects for press freedom
  1. The Effect of self-censorship on news credibility: public' s perception of Hong Kong newspapers after the 1997 Handover

These eassy analysed the statement of “the Joint Declaration of the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of the People's Republic of China on the Question of Hong Kong”, and the credibility and shareholders change of the News media in these years. These eassy let me know more about the situation of Hong Kong and the reason of why their standpoint and points of views are so different. In addition, several opinion polls about how Hong Kong citizen think to the News media have analysed. Moveover, the background of the News medias group have included for drawing the findings.

I decided to focus on the “Ming Pao”, “Oriental Daily News”, “Apple Daily” about how these three newspaper describe “Fish ball revolution” on the 8 February, 2016. To see the standpoints of these newspaper group.

2)     Preliminary findings – What do you discover up till now? (For example, what are the commonalities amongst the texts/interviews?) How do your findings help you answer your research question?

After reading these essay, I discover press freedom has declined with the development of closer economic and political ties with Mainland China after the 1997 handover. "Several media owners are current or former members of the National People’s Congress, China’s parliament. Many have significant business connections in the mainland. Therefore, it is perhaps not surprising that news stories reflect mostly the interests of the dominant class. Even those that do not receive direct funding from Chinese businesses choose to stay away from stories that may cast the mainland in a negative light (Lee & Chen,2009). Self-censorship is now common in the newsrooms of Hong Kong." " Media critic Zhang Tao (2006) says that more and more self-censorship happens in Hong Kong because some media outlets have been acquired by big businesses with economic ties with China. Thus, they now serve their owners’ interests instead of functioning as advocates for the general public’s concerns."
Those are the reason why self-censorship happens in HK.
