1) Progress report - How many interviews did you do so far? And/or how many materials (i.e. media texts) did you research, and how did you research on the texts – textual analysis, genre study, etc.?

In my project, i have completed my interviews with serval people. Two of them are the teenagers that familiar with the New media, that majorly use new media platform to receive message, and the other are the older generations that used to use traditional media and moving on adopting the new media. My major questions are :

1) What do you think the different of new media and traditional media ?
2) What's the advantage of both, and which one you prefer ?
3) What's your consideration when you receive news ?
4) What's the problem that traditional media has that new media can compensate ?

During, the interview some of them has provide some solid examples that to explain their point of view, for example they think that the traditional media platform are lack of numbers, so the news can't be comprehensive, and also they think Hong Kong has serious news filter problem, so that they prefer to receive it in New media, because they have more resources and could hear different side of the opinion, and to understand the incident fully.

2) Preliminary findings – What do you discover up till now? (For example, what are the commonalities amongst the texts/interviews?) How do your findings help you answer your research question?

After the interviews, i discovered that the demand of comprehensive story of teenagers are strong, they have lack of trust from the current serval traditional media platform, also they demand a platform to express their thought, and also be able to discuss with others, we can see the demand of the teenagers from the information are not just the messages itself anymore but also the action they can take from it. It is a huge discovery for me to write about it, because as long as the demand keeps going on, the position of traditional media will keep invading from the new media.
Also they new filter are one of the problem that the interviewers talked most about, so we can see that it is their major concern, we can see people of receiving messages are getting smarter, they would want to get a deeper understanding of what they hear, and the position, attitude of how the media broadcast would also affect the people's thought on the incident.

I found this article quite useful for analyzing the Traditional media and New media, it states that Traditional media are generally characterized by their relatively limited methods of delivering information about social, political, and economic events. Newspapers carry factual stories and editorials accompanied by a limited amount of imagery. TV, of course, delivers pictures together with some factual coverage, some editorial coverage, and a significant amount of advertising. In the case of both newspapers and TV, content is usually produced and selected for distribution by an elite minority. Most importantly, it is generally unidirectional. That is, there is no productive engagement on the part of the reader; it is an exercise in information consumption only. New media, however, blur these distinctions in new ways. On the web, one might still encounter traditional journalism on the sites of the main newspapers. Blogs are examples of this, but they are qualitatively different for a variety of reasons. Even further removed are Twitter comments ('tweets'), YouTube videos, Facebook statuses and many, many more diverse phenomena. Traditional outlets have been modified with the introduction of the option to leave comments on the stories presented.

This article talks about the relationship between New media and young generations, i analyzes different aspect of the relationship, marketing, entertainment and freedom etc. I found this article useful because it provides solid number chart that analyze the reason of teenagers using with New media, what would they and why they do, it all provides. On the other hand, it also study the elder generations usage of New media. Overall the article provides comprehensive study in both of young and elder generations.

Research Progress
I have completed two of my interview with teenagers that how they thought the relationship between the New media and the Traditional media, and the funny thing is the both pointed out some interesting thought. They both thought that the enviornment of politics in Hong Kong would have big influence with it, such as freedom of speech, media filter etc. After the interviews, i would add some more questions with it and to study deeper the influence of politics in Hong Kong of how could they affect the New media and Traditional media.

What is the refined research question that you are setting out to answer? (Please be specific in your research topic)

Why do Hong Kong people use new media (such as the Internet) rather than traditional media (such as TV) to get information and entertainment?

How does this develop themes and debates explored within the lectures of this module? (Please put down the revised short introduction to your project based on the one in blog 2. Remember that the introduction should include the purpose of your research project, significance and key concept(s) that may be useful for your analysis.)

Technologies has advanced into a big different level that we had never imagined in the past, and the invention has brought a huge change to the people of how they receive the message from the media, to the media platform, it also brings them advantage and threat, because the way that they used to broadcast or deliver message to the people has been no longer effective or attractive as usual to the people, but more importantly is to reflect the shortcoming of the traditional media, one of the reason that people tend to use the new media platform is because is has overcome the defect that traditional media has, and we need to study this to understand what's the major concern for those people, and we can find out the reason of why people use new media more than traditional media.

What critical methodologies are you going to use? How are you going to produce the evidence you’ll need to answer your research question?

I am going to do the qualitative research, in-depth interviews with 4-6 users from different age range. The basic questions are "What's the major way for you to receive news information?" , "Do you prefer new media or traditional media, why?", "What's the defect of new/traditional media?" "What's the influence of both to the people?".
Moreover, i am going to compare the way that the traditional media broadcast the information and the way that new media does, to find out what's the different between those two, to find out how the new media is becoming the major way to the people.

Now you should have some references in mind. If so, please put down a short reference list at the end of this blog so that you have a better plan of what articles that you are go to read for the project.

What physical resources (e.g. camera) will this primary research require?

Yes. Mobile phone for voice recording.

Where and when exactly is this primary research going to take place?
(NB for health and safety reasons, we need to know the EXACT locations at which this research will take place and the EXACT times that you’ll be working there)

Interview time: 16-22 March.

Which key persons (e.g. family members, trustworthy friends, business owners, etc.) have agreed to help and support you in carrying out this research?

No

Self-assessment of risk:
Is this research exercise likely to expose you to any health and safety risks or any risk to property? (If the answer is yes, please specify the risks)
(NB these might include: exposure to theft by using a camera in a public place; journeying into an unknown area of town; entering into people’s homes; carrying out ethnographies in places in which excessive alcohol consumption or drug use takes place; etc.)

No

Research Diary 2

In my research project, I am going to explore the topic of new media technology. The research question would be “ How the new media technologies is taking over traditional media and is traditional media no longer the main stream of media platform? ".

Introduction
Nowadays, technologies has advanced into a big different level that we had never imagined in the past, and the invention has brought a huge change to the people of how they receive the message from the media, to the media platform, it also brings them advantage and threat, because the way that they used to broadcast or deliver message to the people has been no longer effective or attractive as usual to the people, but on the other hand we can also see how some organizations rise up or advance to a new way to broadcast and become popular in the society also the social media platform. We will going to study what’s the different of the traditional media and the new media, also why people are not tend to use the traditional media anymore, does that mean we don't need it anymore? Does that mean the new media is better the traditional media? We will explore about that.

Methods to be used
From my research, quantitative research would be my major way to do it. First, we can see how many traditional media company (magazine, TV station, newspaper) had closed down because of the decreasing business, and the reason behind it. On the other hand, we would study the usage of social media, how people use it in a single day. Also, we would study how some companies use the new media as a new platform, and why people are so into it beside of using the new media. From the comparison of new media and traditional media, we could find out what the advantage and disadvantage in two of them, and to see how the traditional media is falling back.
Even though quantitative research is my major way, but supplement of qualitative research is also necessary, to target on different age level, to interview with them of how the look at the traditional media and new media, which one they are prefer? Why? Do they think is ok if just use one them? Those questions can make me study deeper to the user, and find out the reason why they tend to this not that, and we can find out what the problem they have in the media.

Draft questions
1)   When was the last time you used traditional media ?
2)   Do you think that the traditional media is falling behind ?
3)   Why you tend to use the new/traditional media ?

4)   What’s the advantage of the new/traditional media ?

Research Diary 1

In every subject study, we need different type of information to guide and support the report, also with proper judgement, analysis, evaluation, investigation. In the current society, the media and culture combined has the big influence to the people’s life and society. We can’t just study an issue in a particular way, it would just gather one side of information and could not be a comprehensive useful report. We can’t study by text only, film, photography, emotion even fashion can be part of the research.

There are two types of research : Quantitative research & Qualitative research.

Let’s begin with Quantitative research.
Quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys, or by using pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques. Quantitative research focuses on gathering numerical data and generalizing it across groups of people or to explain a particular phenomenon. Qualitative research is based on a fixed-form questionnaire, using a large number of samples to obtain the data. The strengths of Quantitative research is that could provide samples of individuals, communities, or organizations can be selected to ensure that the results will be representative of the population studied. It can be administered and evaluated quickly. There is no need to spend time at the organization prior to administering the survey, and the
responses can be tabulated within a short timeframe.
But the weakness is many important characteristics of people and communities including both rich and poor, for example, identities, perceptions, and beliefs that cannot be meaningfully reduced to numbers or adequately understood without reference to the local context in which people live. We can’t be specific to a particular person, or to listen to their thought.

On the other hand, Qualitative research is designed to reveal a target audience’s range of behavior and the perceptions that drive it with reference to specific topics or issues. It uses in-depth studies of small groups of people to guide and support the construction of hypotheses. The results of qualitative research are descriptive rather than predictive. The major drawbacks associated with qualitative cultural analysis are the process is time-consuming, and
some particular, important issues could be overlooked. Which mean it only could apply on some specific object or particular people.

From my research, i am interested in how the new media taking over traditional media, with this huge amount of target audience, Quantitative research could be my major way, but few particular interviews might be needed to extend my research further.
