1)     Progress report - How many interviews did you do so far? And/or how many materials (i.e. media texts) did you research, and how did you research on the texts – textual analysis, genre study, etc.?

  I have selected 5 interviewees(Both Love Korean culture and watch Taiwanese film) and I have interviewed 3 of them. I will interview the rest before Sunday. They are all 20-25 years old female college students and come from different colleges. For now, I have read 4 books and some articles. About the materials I have found, the contents are about how other foreigners encoding and decoding Korean culture(drama, pop song and life style etc). I will focus on how they encoding/decoding in the articles or books, which is exactly what I decide to do in my research. By reading those articles, except focus on how people decoding/encoding a Taiwanese or Korean film, I will also search the genre of the movie has any elements that make viewers decoding like that or any relevant with the Hong Kong film. Like Hong Kong film has produced in Taiwan now and before and the Golden Horse Award affects many Hong Kongers get in touch with Taiwanese movie in the past and now.

2)     Preliminary findings – What do you discover up till now? (For example, what are the commonalities amongst the texts/interviews?) How do your findings help you answer your research question?  

  After the interviews, I discovered their ages to get in touch with Taiwanese movie basically has no different. They watched Taiwanese movie when they were studying in secondary school. And surprisingly they watched the same movie - Secret by Jay Chow, which is a movie about school love story. They both think the movie has resonance with them because the characters are "ordinary", unlike Korean's student movie. Moreover, they think the cultural background is one of the most important thing because they feel comfortable to hear some language they know. 

To sum up, except the story of the film makes them how to decode, the cultural background is important too. This finding can answer my question about how they interpret them, since the genre of film they have been watched are all love story. It is easy for me to compare details about the Taiwanese film and Korean film, Like the background of character because they think the setting are exaggerated in the Korean movie. Also, the cultural differences between Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korean can help me to do the research because it is the reason cause them seeing Taiwanese film.
