1) Progress report - How many interviews did you do so far? And/or how many materials (i.e. media texts) did you research, and how did you research on the texts – textual analysis, genre study, etc.?

Topic: How do Hong Kong young adult consume violent video game?

I had finished four interviews already, they are all females, and some of the questions are including with:

1.      How long do you spend in playing video game?
2.      Which type of video game you like most?
3.      What are the reasons that make you like playing violent video game?
4.      Do you prefer first-person violent video games or third-person violent game?
5.      How do you learn this type (recently violent video game you are playing) of violent video game?
6.      What do you think of the series of violent video game, do you think there are any improvement such as (plots, bugs, design, quality and etc.) between these series?
7.      Which part you are enjoying the most while you are playing these games?
(GTA, LOL, Metal Gear, Call of duty, Last of us)
If you haven’t played before, would you like to try after you view the game teaser trailer?
8.      What do you think the different between the classic video game such as Classic Super Mario and latest video game in nowadays?
9.      In your favorite violent video game, is there any improvement of the game or any part that make you impress the most?

About the question 4, the interviewees are prefer first- person violent video game than the third-person violent game, because they thought about the screen views of the design is more comprehensive .  For example, when they playing a car racing game, the first-person screen views is easier to control the game and require hundred percentages to concentrate into the game.

2)     Preliminary findings – What do you discover up till now? (For example, what are the commonalities amongst the texts/interviews?) How do your findings help you answer your research question?

From the past week, I found out that running a group interviews is more interesting than individual interviews, because there are sense of resonance between these interviewee while they were sharing their experience of playing violent video game. Also, they are more willing to talk about the game detail such as the game of bug, game of walkthrough, it is like a chemistry of brewing between their communities. It  helps to collection more extra data from the interviews.

  1. Dear Hailey, The questions are fine. Please note that what you need to do now is to make your discussion more theoretical. For question 4, the report of the answers is descriptive. Please think about the ways the "first person's view" could intensify the gratifications of the game players. In addition, whether they find such games are more 'violent' than games using the 'third person's view'. Having said that, please remind getting a list of gratifications from your literature review.
