Topic: How and Why teenage in Hong Kong enjoy playing the series of Resident Evil (Biohazard)?

I have changed my topic and i will only focus on the series of Resident Evil. It's because of the result come out will more accurate and clear. If I do not change my topic and I will focus on all the violence game, because of there are many kinds of violence game and the result come out will become inaccurate. That's the reason that I change the topic.

Questionare:
1) Which series of Resident Evil you have played before?
2) Why you enjoy to play Resident Evil?
3) If you are free at this moment and you are playing the Resident Evil, How many hours do you want to play?
4) Do you have any friends also enjoy playing Resident Evil and will you usually play with him or her together?
5) Do you think you are fans of Resident Evil?
6) If there is a new Resident Evil released, will you buy it immediately?

I have interview a teenage aged 20 and he is a fans of Resident Evil. He has played 5 series of Resident Evil. The reasons of he played 5 series of Resident Evil are because he enjoys the story of the Resident Evil. Also he think the pictures of killing zombies are exciting. He thinks he will play the game until he finishes the game if he is free. He has lots of friends also enjoy playing this game and lots of them are his classmates from secondary school. He thinks he is fans of Resident Evil but he will not buy the game immediately if the new series release because he thinks the game are boring if the game do not improve.

And the preliminary findings are that the fans of Resident Evil is one of their childhood memory. The first game of Resident Evil was released in 1996. And the first game of the interviewee played was Resident Evil 0 and that is the fifth game of Resident Evil. And he was played with his classmates. And until now he is still playing with his friends in secondary school. But he has graduated already. And i think that is a linkage with his classmates.

This is a new point of view that i think the teenage enjoy playing violence game. I think teenage enjoy playing the violence game is because they enjoy doing something they cannot do in real life or to release their pressure in real life before the interview. So I think it will provide a new perspective to me to finish the research.

Topic: How and Why teenager enjoy playing the violence video game?

Literature review

From a chart of the top selling games in 2008, most of the top game selling are violence games. Also the top 10 best selling games in 2015, 7 out of 10 are the violence games. For example the series of Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto. That means playing the violence game is the mainstream of the game players. The reason that the violent game become the mainstream of the game players is violence games are more exciting than other games. A interview research from NPR.org analyse that why teenage enjoy playing violence video game. The result found out that the successful  game should have a great narrative. And most of the violence game can easily have a good narrative and create the conflict. When the game player enjoy to solve the conflict so they will project themselves to the story easily. And the research also mention that why violence game is popular is because violence always include three components. That is Autonomy, Belongings and Competence. Besides that, the game players think that they can do something the can't do in real life in game. And playing violence game can satisfy their violence act. That's why the game player enjoy playing the violence game from the research.

So I want to analyse that is the result also can apply in Hong Kong. And to measure that is the Hong Kong game player enjoy playing the violence game  with the same reasons from the research.

Research Progress

Because of my topic has changed, the research method has also changed. I will focus on the interview 10 teenage who aged 16-25 and included boys and girls. The interviewees should have playing violence game experiences. And the interviewees are also loved playing the violence game. I will focus on why and how they like playing the violence game. And i want to analyse the reason the love playing the violence of game is because of the research result made by the review or others. And i will ask the similar questions that the research has asked to make sure the question wording will not affect the result of my research. It's more easier to compare with the research from the Literature review.

What is the refined research question that you are setting out to answer? (Please be specific in your research topic)

How the level of violence of the content of the video game will affect teenage game player towards the acceptability of violence?
How does this develop themes and debates explored within the lectures of this module? (Please put down the revised short introduction to your project based on the one in blog 2. Remember that the introduction should include the purpose of your research project, significance and key concept(s) that may be useful for your analysis.)

The reason of I interested in analysing this topic because of the debate between the violence game and the real crime is become a hot issue in the society. Many people think that there is a strong relation between the violence games and the crime. But also there are some noises disagree that.  In a research of BBC News, Dr Mark Coulson, associate professor of psychology at Middlesex University, said that there are no relation between the violence behaviours and the violence game. So I want to measure that is the violence game really affected the game player.

And there are lot of research about the relation between the violence behaviour and the violence game. Because of the violence behaviour is hard to measure in a short questionnaire and interview. So i want to measure that the relation between the violence game and the acceptability of violence.

The mass media created the culture in a society. And to attract people to enjoy it. It like a process of Cultivation. That is the mass media create a trend to cultivate the public. In a chart of the top selling games in 2008, most of the top game selling are violence games. Also the top 10 best selling games in 2015, 7 out of 10 are the violence games. For example the series of Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto. That means playing the violence game is the mainstream of the game players. And because of the cultivation theory, the game players will be affected by the media like the violence games easily. So this is the reason that I interested in analysing this topic.

What critical methodologies are you going to use? How are you going to produce the evidence you’ll need to answer your research question?

Example: In-depth interviews with five immigrants from Mainland China

1) Invite 10 teenagers  to do the questionnaire to measure their acceptability of violence. After that invite them to play the violence game. At last they need to do the questionnaire again to measure that is their acceptability of violence have changed or not.

2) Interview the interviewee who have most changed and less changed of acceptability of violence to analyse that the reason why the acceptability of violence have changed.

Now you should have some references in mind. If so, please put down a short reference list at the end of this blog so that you have a better plan of what articles that you are go to read for the project.

Research Diary 2 - Statement of Intent

The research topic that I interested in is the relationship between media and violence. And the summary statement is how the level of violence of the content of the video game will affect teenage game player towards the acceptability of violence.

The reason of I interested in analysing this topic because of the debate between the violence game and the real crime is become a hot issue in the society. Many people think that there is a strong relation between the violence games and the crime. But also there are some noises disagree that. So I want to measure that is the violence game really affected the game player. If yes, how is the level of affected towards the game player.

I will use the qualitative research to analyse this topic because of I can collect the detailed and rich result about how the audience feel and thinking about these kind of violence game. Also this method can let me have opportunity to observe and interview the game players. It is easy to measure how the acceptability of the player towards these violence games and sum up the level of violence. So I can analyse this topic accurately.

And the method I will use is provide a questionnaire to the interviewee first. After that I will provide a violence game to them. At last will also have a interview and questionnaire to them to measure the attitudes of the interviewee towards the violence have changed or not. With this method I can analyse that the acceptability to the violence of the players have change or not. And we will record the level of acceptability to the interviewee before they play the violence game we provided. And then we can compare the acceptability to the violence before and after playing the game we provided.

And the sampling method I will use is the snowball sampling. With this method I can find more teenagers who come from different society and culture environment. That is a advantage that the result will become more reliability.

Research Diary I

Media and culture is a great topic in the cultural studies. One of the result that this topic wants to measure how the mass media influence the public. And also will the message from these mass media bring the same impact to the public. And academic research is a useful way to measure the result. Academic research can help the researcher of cultural studies that to measure the impact of the mass media towards the public. There are many ways to do the academic research. And the Qualitative and the Quantitative research are the common research method.

Let me define the Qualitative research first. The aim of this method is measuring the meanings behind of the people’s thinking and behavior. This method can provide the rich and detailed result.  The strengths of this method are it can explore the topic in more depth and detail.  The researcher has more freedom to explore more angles of the topic from the research questions. And the weakness of this method is more time consuming because of the deeply analysis the interviewer. Also the result came out by this method is hard to approach statistically because of the answer of audiences may have great differences. And the audience’s personal interaction may difficult to the researcher to measure.

Quantitative research can collect the data from large group of people. And mainly to measure the question of “How many” and “How often”. The strengths of this method are the result are easy to collect and analyze quickly and fairly. Also, the result will more reliable and easy to generalized to the entire population if the response rate is high enough. The weakness of this method are may be very costly because the researcher need to interview a large group of people. Also the result this method has are less detail and depth than qualitative research.

And I have an idea of choosing the topic of media and violence because I enjoy and know more about the violence game. I will use the qualitative research to analyze this topic because of I can collect the detailed and rich result about how the audience feel and thinking about these kind of violence game. Also this method can let me have opportunity to observe and interview the game players. It is easy to measure how the acceptable of the player towards these violence games and sum up the level of violence. So I can analyze this topic accurately.
