As my search topic was Pornography, I did ask over 25 person to help me to do the interview. but only few person would help me to do it. So, for now, i have only did 3 interview with those interviewees.  

In those interview, I did ask each one of the interviewee the same question, like how did you defend “Pornography”, How they feel about “Pornography” and asked some of their Background information. I believed that their background will be the key of how they decode the Pornographic media. 

In my research, I would like to find out how people think of pornographic media. Different people will have different point of view to that. So I defined that as a “decoding research”. The way how those interviewees think of Pornographic media is the matter of my research. According to an article which called “Encoding/Decoding” form Stuart Hall, He thought there are three hypothetical position of decoding message. The first one is “ Dominant-Hegemonic position”, the second one is “Negotiated code” and the last one called “oppositional code”. I believed that these three hypothetical position of decoding message will help me to find out how those interviewees consume the pornographic media. 

On the other hand, three different interviewees were mention same topic coincidentally. It’s about rape porn video. They did have different point of view about rape, but when I asked their opinion about pornographic media, they just carry out this topic. I believe that must be meaning something or there is connection between Pornographic media and media violence. That’s why those interviewees are mentioned that topic coincidentally. One of the interviewees was talking about how he despise any rape porn. He thought that sexual behavior should be mutual consent. If not, that should not regarded as normal and it will become a crime. 

After I did the interviews with these three person, I didn’t expect that they will mention about rape porn. Therefor I will search some articles about media violence or any reading had mention the relationship between pornographic media and media violence. 

Last but not the least, there are few more interviewees will help me to do the research, maybe they will mention the same topic about pornographic media, or they will cary out another whole new topic. So I decided that when I was interviewing them, I will use recorder to record the content they had mention. If there are any new topic comes out, I can use those record as a basic information and search the supporting article to do my research.

In this research, I will interview three to five people for analyzing how they consume pornographic media. I believe that I'm different place, people have different opinions about pornographic media. That's why I have invited one of my friend who come from the United State to ask his opinions. The other interviewees, I had invited two interviewees to do the interview. They are all local people, one male and one female. I believe that different gender will comes out different answer to me for analysis their opinions. When the interview start i’ll show some video and photo about porn, ask how they feel and check their emotion. Then i will ask them some question about pornographic media. At the last i will recording when we were having the interview for record. 

Secondly, after I study the positivist media research, I'd realized that pornographic media and media violence are having the same effects in our society. Some people think that we will become more violence after we have watched the violence movie. If the subject changed to pornographic, people who have read more pornographic media, will the society consume they were the lechery? Also I would like to find out how people identify the meaning of “pornographic”. So here by, I will use a article who written by Peter Lehman. He had wrote a book about pornography, film and culture. According his definition of pornography, sexuality could be found in everywhere.

“Sexuality is never left unspoken in our culture: it is massively present, but always subject to limitations. It is exhaustively defined across a series of specialist discourses (medicine, psychiatry, criminology, etc.) but its more public manifestation is throughout allusion rather than description. Forms of humor, representations of women, clothing, and other diverse practices all invoke sexuality.”  

On the other hands, some might said that pornographic media has degraded women because in those media , women were always become a objects who bullied or owned by males power. But I think that was the unilateral way to look at pornography. There was an article talking about the relationship between pornographic media and male audiences. But unfortunately, that's only have Chinese version. I quoted a shot paragraph down blow.

What is the refined research question that you are setting out to answer? (Please be specific in your research topic)

After I refined my research topic, I have conform that my research topic is “ How people consume the pornographic media”. I would like to find out how Pornographic Media can catch people’s attention in resent time. 

How does this develop themes and debates explored within the lectures of this module? (Please put down the revised short introduction to your project based on the one in blog 2. Remember that the introduction should include the purpose of your research project, significance and key concept(s) that may be useful for your analysis.)

In resent days, sexual culture is more opener that people thought. As long as the Technology had developed, people get browsing the pornographic with their computer, tablet or even their smart phone. According to this situation, I would like to find out how the people who did watch or to make contact with the pornographic media. 

Pornographic media isn’t the mainstream culture, so i identify that as a subculture. and also the pornographic media the one of the product produced by the sexual culture, i believed that it’s also included the theory of generation identity. How people will think about sex after they had read the pornographic media. Will they are going be a homosexual guy after they read some homosexual porn? Or will people getting more violence than before after they read some rape porn? After this research, i hope i can find out the relationship between people and pornographic media. 

What critical methodologies are you going to use? How are you going to produce the evidence you’ll need to answer your research question?

Based on my research topic, I will use qualitative research method to analysis the answers. Because my research is wanted to find out how people consuming pornographic media. That’s mean different people will give different answer to me. so I think quantitative research method is the best way to find out the research answers. In view of this, I will in-depth interview 3 males and 3 females as my target interviewees. They are form different ages group and they were in different relationship status, some of them were single, some of them were in a relationship with someone.

Research Diary 2 - Statement of Intent

Summary statement of what I would like to explore for my final project:

The research topic i would like to choose is  “Globalization or hybridization of genre”. The reason why i choose this topic as my research topic because i think Hong Kong is the place between Western and Oriental culture. There will be so much things can compare with the other and i will focus on films and sexual culture. That’s why my research question is “ How do Hong Kong Teenager  consume Western and Oriental movie with sexual element.”

how this develops themes and concepts raised in lectures:

Hong Kong, as a international city, there are many movies come and show on cinema everyday. Those movie may be come form China, Japan, US or even Korea. etc. Each movie were representing their home country’s culture. But when those were showing in Hong Kong, many things will changed by subtitle. Or some of those local movie had add some western movie element, for example “Form Vegas to Macao” had add a robot character like Iron man. Was that Movie still can count on local movie or a hybridity movie? 

Through this research, i hope i could find out why the western movie was more popular than local and china (Oriental) movie when those movie using the same sexual element. for example, Ted 1/2 and From Vegas to Macao. Both of them were using some sexual and violent element, but why those teenager in Hong Kong thought “Ted 1/2” was much better than “Form Vegas to Macao”. Those movie were representing their own culture for different country. But Why the Western Movie always more popular than the local movie. 

Methods to be used:

In this part, I prefer to use qualitative and quantitive methodology both for supporting my research. Using Quantitive methodology because i need to know which genre of movie people would like to watch. And also quantitive methodology can separate the participants ages and help me to find out which how many people like to western movie and how many like the local or Oriental movie. That’s why i will create a questionnaire for those question to connect the data and analysis them. Also i will use snowball sampling as my sampling method because this method and help me to find more teenagers who come from different places and had different educational background. All those people will become one of my advantage of my research result and make my research become more reliability.

After i connect all those questionnaire, i will invite those people who had finish the questionnaire to have a interview to ask them more specific detail, like his/ her feeling about movie had add some sexual element, or how they feel a local movie had add some western sexual element. after the interview, i will connect all those data form the interviewees and analysis how do Hong Kong Teenager consume Western and Oriental movie with sexual element.

Research diary 1

Doing a academic research is one of the way to find out a social issue and also it’s the way to make our research more credible and reliable. There are two main method to help us doing the research, it is Qualitative way and Quantitative way.



First Qualitative is focus on finding the reason why people acting in a specific action. This method is more focus on the reason more than the number of people or things. So those researcher will use the other way to connect the data, for example, interviewing a small group of people or make a Questionnaire with some opening question. In the Questionnaire, those researcher will use “why”, “what” or “how” as the beginning of the question. When people answering the questionnaire, they will give more specific detail to the research. Then those researcher will analysis those data and find out the reason. At the least of the research, those researcher will according the data and emphasizes the content of the research, then they will launch a whole new theory or using one theory to explain the result.

On the other hand, Quantitative is focus on the number more than the reason. Simply specking, quantitative method is connecting the data form the large group of people for measuring study. This method was used for doing some biggest social issue research, like population research. Or when there are different people, those researcher will using information graphics to separate those data in a few groups. This method will show us the main direction of the whole problem, not just depend on one or two opinion. In this method, those researcher will not using interview as the way to connect data, they will create a questionnaire with close ending question, for example, “Yes”, “No” question, or rating question. This method is also the way could connect large data as fast as possible.

Each method have different strengths and weakness. Quantitative can connect a large data in a short time and it’s also can help the research separate in few different groups, but those data can not show us the specific reason in the research result. Those data can only tell us how many different group of people in the research and make the result more clearly. And there also too many audiences may reduce the reliability and validity. So researcher must choose the audiences randomly. It will cost so much man power in the research.

Qualitative is the opposite of Quantitative. Qualitative method can tell us the reason of those target audiences behavior. But it’s also cost too many time because of analysis each different data one by one. Those researcher had to focus on one specific group and analysis the data which connected form the group. it’s may inferred the reason but it cannot tell us how many target audiences were joining the research.
