Research Dairy 1

What is the media culture? It is means to the overall impact and intellectual guidance exerted by the media (mainly TV, radio and movies), not only on public opinion but also on tastes and values.

When the information can be easily spread to give mass society, if we do not carefully collect information, do some in-depth research, then get out of the findings are very prone to make mistakes and deviations, or inconsistent with the facts. When these wrong information dissemination via the mass media open to the community people will think that these things are already survey conducted by professionals before, they will not hesitate to believe that these messages, combined with discussions with others.

These messages are spread out by the mass media can affect a person’s values, and even affect the views of a thing, so bring a lot of “sequela”.

Last Sunday, a cold front hit Hong Kong, Tai Mo Shan took a large number of public tours ice, frostbite and falls many people at that time, need to mobilize two hundred fireman to support, polices of road closure. A couple dissatisfied with road closures, and police confrontation. Woman hysterically denounced asked why the police restrict people's freedom,   "life is my own," as a reason to continue to insist on the mountain, and laugh at the firefighters when they fall down due to the wet floor.

After Apple news reports, seeking for and displaying the background information of she, but also by many people kept online abuse, and even the creation of a secondary news Apple movie trailers: the ignorant to satirize the lady. News should have been reported related issues with the public, of course, the lady vexatious act is a negative example, but the news media should not focus on her.

We need to keep our research is to ensure that the message disseminated is objective and without error, and this is the reason we need to do research.

Qualitative research can make the data become more comparable, the conclusion, the relationship can be drawn and understood by the audiences more easily. Quantitative research can make the result to have a smaller standard deviation, which means the result is not draw by sweeping. These two methods are both important to increase the credibility of my research.

First, textual Analysis of most of the famous news media in Hong Kong will be conducted. These includes the TV news such as, TVB news; Newspaper such as Oriental Daily News, The Sun, Apple Daily, Hong Kong Economic Journal; and also the online media such as 100 most, Speak Out HK. Comparison of the points of views of the same events, the focusing news types, and the background of the owners of the different news media will be compared in the research. Then, the research will try to figure out the relationship between and political economy approach media ownership and media content.
Also, survey will be executed in this research in order to gather information and data. An online survey will be hold and at least 50 copies of questionnaire will be delivered to Hong Kong Citizen randomly, to know which media they would like to read, how they feel the credibility of it and how they feel about the Hong Kong government.
The textual analysis and the survey will be the primary source for my research, these can make the audiences would like to trust my research more.

In Addition, some reading reference will be consulted in this research as my secondary sources. For examples, some books about the histories of the media owners or the companies may help me to discover more about the background of the media such as what political economy are they want to approach.

  1. Dear Audrey, There is a clear plan for your research project. The writing also shows your understanding of the strengths of quantitative and qualitative research methods. My suggestion is to limit the scope of your research by focusing on viewpoints of different newspapers with the support of a few interviewees' feedback. Otherwise the project would be very difficult to handle especially in a short timeframe.
