Research Diary 1

TVB has a show called “Scoop” every evening and they have a simple survey everyday about daily issue or gossip from Hong Kong. Then, they will require audience to do this and show the results later but the reliability is questioned though because TVB doesn’t show any resource of audiences. Speaking of the survey, it is an era require everything has resources and reliability or else people will not trust it. It is understandable though because the technology has improved a lot, which means everything could be imitate or fabricate. That is why we need academic research on media and culture because it needs reliability and validity.

There are two different and common research methods that we are using today. Qualitative and Quantitative research. Let’s talk about Qualitative research first. It is not easy because it has lots of information. It can easily provide in-depth case information and describing complex phenomena by conceptual and theoretical work. But the disadvantages are the time you need lots of time to collect the data because you have to interview loads of people to make the data more reliable. Also, it is easily influence by the interviewer biases and it makes the result come up deviate from truth. On the other hand, Qualitative research is much more easy but lack of reliability and validity because it is simple, just about digits. Unlike the Quantitative research, it could be designed to not influence the result by the researcher’s design.

As I have interest about filming and movie so I choose the topic” Globalization or hybridization of genre.” The movie I picked is “The Ring” because it is a proper topic to compare about the difference between western and eastern version. Obviously, their culture is different so it turns out the content of the movie is not really the same. For example, the religion and the effect. Western people mostly are Christian or Catholicism and eastern believe in Buddha. Also, the eastern version is more focus on the atmosphere and western version is focus on effect and make up.

Therefore, Qualitative research is more suitable for this topic. First, it is a topic about globalization and glocalisation differences and similarities. The culture difference between eastern and western can’t be explain in digits so we have to do some in-depth researches to analyze. Also, the theories about this topic are way too many so we have to generate all the data and it needs reliable and validity researches.

  1. Dear Wilson, The beginning of the writing is interesting and it is nicely related to the question in the assignment brief. Though I do not agree that qualitative research is easier to conduct, the writing illustrates the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative and quantitative research methods clearly. Regarding the research question, genre theory is appropriate. You can go into more detail about the cultural differences as mentioned. Nice work!
