The research topic I would like to explore is about transnational consumption of media texts. The research question would be “How do Hong Kong college students consume Korean TV dramas?”
The reason why I choose this topic is that the trend of Korean culture in Hong Kong has become so popular over the past few years, even to the extent that I feel like our original culture is gradually changing for the adaption to such “external culture”. Korean culture affects different aspects of our society, from fashion and cosmetics style to food consumption. All this was starting from the broadcast of a popular Korean drama - “My Love from the Star”, which was starred by Kim Soo-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun. Since then, many friends of mine have become extremely addicted to Korean dramas and sometimes even stay up all night for watching the full episodes of the dram. This arouses my interest in this phenomenon and makes me eager to know more about in what way this transnational consumption associated with our culture.
The research result is significant as it will allow me to obtain in-depth understanding of the underlying reasons that explain why my friends have such behavior. To answer the research question, qualitative method will be used to collect data for analysis. First of all, a questionnaire will be designed for such purpose. Qualitative research method will be used for the research topic.
The first part of the questionnaire would be information/attitude section. Therefore, I can screen out those not in the target group and just focus on college students – the group of people that relevant to my research. Next part would be a brief introduction which shows with which institution I am working and the purpose of the survey. The total number of questions would be no more than twelve as I hope to make it precise and shorten the time needed to interview, therefore it would be more effective and able to increase the responsive rate. The questions mainly about how Korean drama means to their lives and how it affects their daily consumption, such as, food, cosmetics and fashion, comparing with couple of years ago when we had never watched it.
I will choose to do ethnographic method, so the survey will be carried out in HKU. The sampling method to be used is convenient sampling as HKU is undoubtedly full of college students. Personally, it is the most convenient and time-saving approach to conduct an efficient and effective survey.

Hi Ada, Whereas the research question and the rationale behind it are clear enough, the research method is confusing. There may be a typo in the third paragraph. You keep saying "qualitative research method" but what you are going to conduct is a quantitative research. But then you talk about qualitative ethnographic method again. Please clarify. To be more accurate, when you say "college students," you should send your questionnaires to or do your ethnographic study in other institutions rather than just HKU. You will need to think about the research design before collecting data.
