What is the refined research question that you are setting out to answer? (Please be specific in your research topic)

Why do Hong Kong people use new media (such as the Internet) rather than traditional media (such as TV) to get information and entertainment?

How does this develop themes and debates explored within the lectures of this module? (Please put down the revised short introduction to your project based on the one in blog 2. Remember that the introduction should include the purpose of your research project, significance and key concept(s) that may be useful for your analysis.)

Technologies has advanced into a big different level that we had never imagined in the past, and the invention has brought a huge change to the people of how they receive the message from the media, to the media platform, it also brings them advantage and threat, because the way that they used to broadcast or deliver message to the people has been no longer effective or attractive as usual to the people, but more importantly is to reflect the shortcoming of the traditional media, one of the reason that people tend to use the new media platform is because is has overcome the defect that traditional media has, and we need to study this to understand what's the major concern for those people, and we can find out the reason of why people use new media more than traditional media.

What critical methodologies are you going to use? How are you going to produce the evidence you’ll need to answer your research question?

I am going to do the qualitative research, in-depth interviews with 4-6 users from different age range. The basic questions are "What's the major way for you to receive news information?" , "Do you prefer new media or traditional media, why?", "What's the defect of new/traditional media?" "What's the influence of both to the people?".
Moreover, i am going to compare the way that the traditional media broadcast the information and the way that new media does, to find out what's the different between those two, to find out how the new media is becoming the major way to the people.

  1. Dear Adrian, Please start doing your interviews. In the meantime, you would need to review "uses and gratifications theory" in your final work. The three books are relevant but they may not be the focus of your study. You can cite some of their ideas with proper citation. But they may not help you 'answer' your research questions accurately. Please briefly discuss your preliminary findings in the next blog.
