Research Diary 1

No one can deny that there are so many diversities in our society, whether in terms of population structure or simply cultural differences, which make our society extremely complicating. Media, which has become so important and indivisible to our daily life in the modern world, undoubtedly has huge impacts to our culture. At the same time, our culture affects how we use media as well. Thus, the relationship between media and culture is really hard to explain, not to mention couple with the complication of our society itself. This whole thing just arouses so many questions, queries and even interests in our minds. By conducting academic research, through quantitative research and/or qualitative research methods, we at least have a systematic and more effective way to collect data and further analyse the topic. We may be able to obtain some useful information to explain how ones’ cultural background and habits affect their use of media. Hopefully, it can also help us know more about how media and culture affect our lives.

Quantitative research method is to quantify data and generalize results with random samples without influence of many variables. The strength of quantitative research is that it can collect comparatively large amount of data in one time, but the weakness is that it may cause the issues of reliability and validity. Qualitative research method is to gain an understanding of underlying reasons and to provide insights into the setting of a problem and/or hypotheses by collecting data in naturalistic settings. Yet, it is generally more time-consuming and the result may be incapable to represent the single truth.

I have one research topic in mind right now, which is about transitional consumption of media texts. As the trend of Korean culture in Hong Kong has become so popular over the past few years. Many friends of mine are very addicted to K-pop, Korean drama and reality shows. They spend a lot of money on buying Korean cosmetics, food, commodities and many other things that made in Korea. They even travel to Korea around 4 times a year – Korea has become their second home. This arouses my interest in this phenomenon and want to know more about in what way this transnational consumption associated with out culture.

Qualitative research method would be appropriate for the above research topic because the purpose for me to engage in this research topic is to try obtaining in-depth understanding of the underlying reasons that can explain why my friends have such behaviour, whereas quantitative research method rather tends to explain the casual influence and provide a casual interpretation.

  1. Dear Ada, The summary of the strengths and weaknesses of quantitative and qualitative research methods is precise. You also selected the right method in researching on the proposed topic. As a reminder, it should be "transnational media consumption" rather than "transitional." Hope that this could also help clarify what you are going to do for the project.
