Summary of the article:
The Korean wave started at 2004 according to the article, one of the television network started to play Korean drama instead of American, Mexican or the local dramas. Some of the dramas became very popular to the Filipino people regardless of age, gender and class. Nevertheless, almost of the young Filipino women in the study knew the fairytale romance is rarely happen in reality. But they still related to the Korean's more than other dramas because Korean dramas have more realistic storyline than American and Mexican dramas are full of violence and action drama, which is not their kind of genre.
The article points out the "genre" is the reason why Filipino women would choose to consume Korean drama, it's more realistic and caused the women related more than violence or "life of freedom" dramas. Moreover, young women are desire for consuming power, rich and handsome boyfriend or successful career after watching Korean dramas.
Apart from the genre differences, the Filipino women expressed gendered discourse and reflection on the female character in the dramas, they impressed their fighting spirits to
have successful career. In the American and Mexican dramas, most of the plots are about men fighting and violence scene which is a huge difference from the Korean ones.
Research progress:
I have finished just one pilot survey with my friend who is 23 year-old women, loves Korean drama and Taiwanese film at the same time. After this, I have clarify my mind and focus on why they like seeing Taiwanese film and how do they interpret them and find out the comparison of the interviewees' preference of Taiwanese over Korean ones. After set up the questions and reveal the survey, i will start to do the in-depth interviews with 10 target interviewees. Around 20-25 young lady who love/watch Korean dramas and Taiwanese films on next week, after the group meeting.
