What is the refined research question that you are setting out to answer?

My research topic is ‘How do Hong Kong college students consume Korean TV dramas?’

How does this develop themes and debates explored within the lectures of this module?

The reason why I choose this topic is that the trend of Korean culture in Hong Kong has become so popular over the past few years, even to the extent that I feel like our original culture is gradually changing for the adaption to such “external culture”. Korean culture affects different aspects of our society, from fashion and cosmetics style to food consumption. All this was starting from the broadcast of a popular Korean drama - “My Love from the Star”, which was starred by Kim Soo-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun. Since then, many friends of mine have become extremely addicted to Korean dramas and sometimes even stay up all night for watching the whole series. This arouses my interest in this phenomenon and makes me eager to know more about in what way this transnational consumption associated with our culture.

What critical methodologies are you going to use? How are you going to produce the evidence you’ll need to answer your research question?

I would like to use qualitative method by conducting in-depth interviews to research on the media consumption topic. I would interview 5 individual college students in a few universities in Hong Kong. Ethnographic method will be used to focus on college students who like Korean drama – the group of people that are relevant to my research. The total number of questions that will be asked in the interview would be around twelve. The questions mainly about how Korean drama means to their lives and how it affects their daily consumption, such as, food, cosmetics and fashion, comparing with couple of years ago when we had never watched it.

What physical resources will this primary research require?

I would use my smartphone’s voice memo function to record the interviews, as it allows me to revisit any time point in the interview for ease of reference and also prevent missing of any important view points addressed by the interviewees.

Where and when exactly is this primary research going to take place?

This survey will be carried out in different universities in Hong Kong such as HKU, UST and PolyU. The sampling method to be used is ‘convenient sampling’ as universities are undoubtedly full of college students (i.e. my target interviewees). Personally, it is the most convenient and time-saving approach to conduct an efficient and effective survey.

Which key persons (e.g. family members, trustworthy friends, business owners, etc.) have agreed to help and support you in carrying out this research?

To be confirmed as at this moment I believe I can well handle the interviews by myself.

Self-assessment of risk:
Is this research exercise likely to expose you to any health and safety risks or any risk to property?

It is not likely to expose myself to any health and safety risks or any risk to property as universities are the places with trustworthy security and I will take good care of my personal belongings. The only possible risk would be encounter unfriendly interviewees or being impeded by the security guards.

  1. Dear Ada, The writing is comprehensive. You can start doing the data collection. You will also need to read the selected articles for the purpose of finding theoretical concepts for your research. Apart from your proposed ones, you may want to re-visit the article written by Stuart Hall related to encoding/decoding model. Your 'introduction' in the second part of this blog is fine. You can now strengthen it by adding some theoretical terms.
