Topic: How and Why teenager enjoy playing the violence video game?


Literature review


From a chart of the top selling games in 2008, most of the top game selling are violence games. Also the top 10 best selling games in 2015, 7 out of 10 are the violence games. For example the series of Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto. That means playing the violence game is the mainstream of the game players. The reason that the violent game become the mainstream of the game players is violence games are more exciting than other games. A interview research from NPR.org analyse that why teenage enjoy playing violence video game. The result found out that the successful  game should have a great narrative. And most of the violence game can easily have a good narrative and create the conflict. When the game player enjoy to solve the conflict so they will project themselves to the story easily. And the research also mention that why violence game is popular is because violence always include three components. That is Autonomy, Belongings and Competence. Besides that, the game players think that they can do something the can't do in real life in game. And playing violence game can satisfy their violence act. That's why the game player enjoy playing the violence game from the research.

So I want to analyse that is the result also can apply in Hong Kong. And to measure that is the Hong Kong game player enjoy playing the violence game  with the same reasons from the research.

Research Progress


Because of my topic has changed, the research method has also changed. I will focus on the interview 10 teenage who aged 16-25 and included boys and girls. The interviewees should have playing violence game experiences. And the interviewees are also loved playing the violence game. I will focus on why and how they like playing the violence game. And i want to analyse the reason the love playing the violence of game is because of the research result made by the review or others. And i will ask the similar questions that the research has asked to make sure the question wording will not affect the result of my research. It's more easier to compare with the research from the Literature review.

  1. Dear Hoiyin, please kindly explain the terms Autonomy, Belongings and Competence in more details. In fact, I took a look of the article but sorry that it cannot be considered as academic reference which is a requirement for your assignment. The ideas are fine but they are only kind of personal observations which may not be testable. Try to adopt the uses and gratifications model for your analysis.
